The future is not predictable, but my answer would be something close to a big fat NO.
Maybe something else will lead to communism, but not robotics.
The upholders of this theory claim that with advanced robotics, there is no other sustainable economic system besides communism. Well, I can imagine a lot of different scenarios where robotics plays an important part, and the society works perfectly without communism.
So I found no argument or no reason to accept that theory. Of course, I am not proofing it wrong, but I see no sustainability. Let’s face facts. There is always someone saying “When that happens, society will change to communism”. And this works for almost every meaning of “that”.
But on the other hand, it is a very interesting question.
If robotics and Artificial Intelligence will replace human labour in most jobs, what will happen to the labor market?
We already have an image of the potential of robotics and AI from “low cost” services. Replacing human work by machines, and adding a lot of economy scales we get very low prices. This means that lower classes gain access to more services.
This means that services without human labor get really cheap and for everyone, whether human services become a luxury.
So probably a society based in robotics will have a lot of robotics, and high standards of development might allow government to uphold left popular policies. There is an economic concept in which the government offers every person a small income, no matter their jobs or their salary. This way you can be very rich or just receive that much, but you always get some. This may or may not exist. And a lot of other left politics, but there is no strong reason for the market economy to disappear.
If something, robotics offers humanity to market economy, has it gives all the basics at very low prices, and for everyone. And if you want to have a little bit of luxury, you can always find a good job providing services.
